Criticisms and press

“Velasco’s universe is contained here with the utmost degree of poetry and truth, stark reality, and an ever-present utopia (…). It lays bare the desire, fear, and hope that merge around a woman who has just separated from her partner and who comes to believe that the return of love is as strange, uncertain, and unexpected as a UFO sighting. Thus, fiction, autofiction, and science fiction unite to tell a very personal story where words, music, and dance each have their expressive space to convey this intimate and heartbreaking world, which, nevertheless, also includes touches of humor and even sarcasm.”

(…) “The duo of Maricel Álvarez and Carlos Beluga is superb, capable of keeping the viewer absolutely mesmerized by María Velasco’s fantastic story, which, in my opinion, is her best direction to date.”
“María Velasco has given a slap to her theater, to her demons, to her dramaturgy full of ghosts of the past, and to her ritualistic, slow-paced staging. And that marvel is called Aliens Will Come and They Will Have Your Eyes (until May 11 at Nave 10 in Matadero, Madrid). A piece that is a breath of life (…). When Bowie’s voice, barely 23 years old, sounds in that 1969 recording, the play opens, inviting the viewer to rediscover the joy of that song they’ve been hearing for years as the soundtrack to any kind of counterfeit merchandise. A pure metaphor for one of the central themes of Velasco’s new proposal: being able to listen again, to enjoy, to be moved, to feel, to love (…). Thus, a space is created, an imaginary world on stage, where the freedom of genres and formats used makes more sense than ever (…). For this adventure, the director has protected herself and called on two accomplices to inhabit the stage.”The first, Maricel Álvarez, a leading figure in experimental theater and performance in Argentina, Velasco's stage alter ego.The second, the astonishing Carlos Beluga, actor, musician, and dancer, a tremendous burst of talent and presence. Both are superb and imbue the stage with a freedom that expands the work.”
“The Aliens Will Come and They Will Have Your Eyes is a brilliant, optimistic, realistic, and heartwarming piece, where the protagonist's dialogue resonates with the audience.”

“The Aliens Will Come and They Will Have Your Eyes begins like a found footage film, with that grainy, home-recording feel projected onto the scene, evolving into a Hellenic drama where the protagonist is subjected to a terrifying prophecy. It then moves through romantic comedy and musical elements, ultimately becoming a Technicolor love story reminiscent of the French New Wave. María Velasco gifts us an unexpected love story in an excellent and enjoyable production, arriving just when I wasn't expecting anything from this theater season, and at least I've just turned forty.”
